A Special Visitor

Jack's Grandma or 'Mormor,' as they say in Sweden, came to visit us today. She told us her story about coming to America. "Everything was big here, big buildings, big steaks. In Sweden, you would divide up the steak into small pieces and feed a whole family." She met her husband in Germany. She was on vacation and he was in the US service. When she was just 20, she immigrated to the United States. She came over on her father's ship. He was a sea captain and was bringing Volkswagens to the United States. It took ten long days! When she got here she worked as a maid to get her visa. It took seven years to become a United States citizen. The hardest part about coming to America was being away from her family and having to learn English. She brought only one suitcase with her and in it was a Swedish/English dictionary and the decorative horses shown below. She used her dictionary so much that it became worn out! Thank you Mormor for sharing your story with us.
